Teflon Dons – Rudiments EP (30th Anniversary)

Aaron Paar and Dave Fogg will be well known to real deep house devotees as the pair behind the Telfon Dons alias that defined the second wave in the mind-cities (and also did fine work as LA Housin' Authority). Their first-ever EP under this project was the Rudiments EP, which dropped back in 1996 and now gets a deserved reissue. The first tune alone is worth copping this one: 'Sun Fist Rising' has effortlessly cool, laidback drums with an irresistible wiggle and soft-focus chords, all of which are lovely enough, but the aching male vocal really adds some emotional pull. There are also bumpier jams like 'Night Of The Jackal,' tougher, tech-leaning sounds like 'Twin Dragons In Search Of Pearls', US garage gems like 'You Ain't Really Down Nervous Broad' and sunny, percussive delights like 'Elixer Vitae.' A still superb EP.
