When it first appeared on Dutch label Djax-Up Beats way back in 1994, Glenn Underground’s third single, ‘The Unborn’, was warmly received.
Listening back to the record via this Groovin’ Italy reissue, it’s easy to see why. Like his other releases of the period, it strikes a perfect balance between energy-packed, techno-influenced intensity and the melodious deep house sound he’d later become famous for.
Check first the frankly filthy title track, a jacking, TB-303 and TR-909-driven slab of mind-altering peak-time insanity, before admiring the luscious deep house/Motor City techno fusion of ‘Tek-Na-Logie’. ‘101 Dolomations’ is a smooth but jacking Detroit techno mutation marked out by rising and falling electronic motifs, while closing cut ‘New Age Experience’ sounds like a Chicagoan’s take on the Burrell Brothers’ early ’90s Nu Groove productions.
