A Guy Called Gerald – Voodoo Ray EP

To mark the relaunch of his legendary mid-to-late 90s label Juicebox, Gerald Simpson AKA A Guy Called Gerald has dusted down a couple of classics from his bulging back catalogue. On side A, we get one of the most influential British dance records of all time: Simpson’s peerless 1988 anthem ‘Voodoo Ray’. However familiar it is, the track never seems to age, thanks in no small part to its clanking industrial melody, bold bassline and heady female vocal snippets. It should be in everyone’s collection. Over on side B, there’s a chance to savour soulful 1990 vocal number ‘I Won’t Give In’, from Simpson’s Automatikk album, which is arguably the closest he got to sounding like the mighty Larry Heard – albeit with plenty of his own distinctive musical characteristics.
