If you are going to remix a classic track, you need an artist with the requisite reputation to undertake the task. Planet E understands that clearly, with Berghain icon Marcel Dettmann commissioned to rework “Country Boy Goes Dub”, a track from Carl Craig’s Paperclip People project. Originally issued as part of the classic ’96 album The Secret Tapes Of Dr. Eich, “Country Boy Goes Dub” in original form still sounds from another dimension and is yet another example of how forward thinking Carl Craig was in his 1990s pomp. The startling concoction of samples, metallic drum machines, 808’s, guitar loops and serious dubwise tendencies make it stand out today. Dettmann’s remix first surfaced on his precision mix for Fabric last year and is a fine modern reinterpretation that recalibrates certain key elements of the original but feels quite distinct all the same.
